Do you love the look of old, worn books but can’t find any in your area? I’m going to show you how to take newer books and give them that perfectly aged appearance.

First, grab some sandpaper and sand the covers and spines of your books. Distressing the surface will give the books an old worn look. This method works best on fabric-covered books, so try to find those if possible.

Depending on the book, you can sometimes completely remove the text, but overall the goal is to make it unreadable, especially because in the next step you will be adding an IOD transfer over the top.

IOD recently released their holiday collection, and my favorite collection is their stunning gold Gilded Tinsel IOD Transfer. It’s absolutely beautiful and adds an elegant, shiny gold foil to your project.

For this project, I decided to add the gold music notes to the spines of my books.

To apply the IOD transfer, first, I cut the transfer into strips to fit perfectly on the book spine.

Then, I removed the backing, placed the transfer on the spine of the book, and used the transfer stick to rub it onto the surface.

Then, I peeled off the transfer paper so that it revealed the gold detailing on the book.

The gold foil adheres beautifully, and when paired with darker red or green books, it creates a striking holiday aesthetic.

For the front cover, I used the music sheet wording from the same transfer collection. There are also lots of labels and other elements included, so you can customize your designs however you’d like.

I followed the same steps as above to apply the transfer to the cover of the books.

To finish the look, I wrapped a little bit of jute twine around the book.

Then, I threaded a gold brass bell through the twine and tied it so that it laid beautifully on top right below the gold words.

For the final step, I included a touch of greenery into the twine to bring a little more Christmas vibes into the overall look.

These small details really bring the entire Christmas project together!

What do you think? Can you tell that these were new books?

Whether you display them on your coffee table, stack them on a mantel, or incorporate them into a centerpiece, these aged books are sure to add warmth and personality to your Christmas decor.

I hope this DIY inspires you to get creative and give your home that cozy, vintage holiday feel.
