What Is Dixie Belle Crackle?

Dixie Belle Crackle is a specialty medium that creates a beautiful, aged, and weathered paint finish—perfect for giving your DIY projects a vintage, timeworn look. When applied between two layers of paint, it causes the top coat to “crack,” revealing bits of the base color underneath. The result is a naturally distressed texture that adds instant character to furniture, home décor, and craft pieces.

I’ve used Dixie Belle Crackle a few times now on past projects, and every time I fall a little more in love with it. For my 4th of July flag, we hung it on the porch, and the crackle effect made it look like a piece that’s been passed down for generations — perfectly weathered from years of summer sun. I absolutely LOVE how it turned out!

I also used it on a pumpkin project made with the Oak Leaves & Acorns IOD mould, and it turned out SO good! The texture from the crackle added just the right amount of vintage charm — it’s those little details that make a piece feel extra special.

It’s an easy way to achieve a farmhouse, shabby chic, or antique-style finish with minimal effort and maximum charm!

Ready to See How I Painted a Perfectly Chippy, Aged Look on Wooden Corbles Using Dixie Belle Crackle…?

While scouring the Goodwill Bins, I came across these gorgeous wooden corbels — such a fun find! I was worried the tape had left a residue on the wood. The tape on them left behind some sticky residue and minor wood damage. Luckily, I knew exactly what to do. A little Dixie Belle Crackle to the rescue!

I’ve recently started playing with this product, and it’s so much fun! If you love that chippy, aged-paint look—Dixie Belle Crackle will be your new best friend. This specialty medium creates the most beautiful, cracked, weathered finish that makes any piece look like it’s been aged to perfection over time. It’s the easiest way to get that authentic vintage texture without sanding, scraping, or layering a bunch of products. Just a few simple steps and you’ve got that “found it in an old farmhouse” kind of charm.

Step 1:

I used a STAALMEESTER Pointed Sash Brush to apply 1 layer of Dixie Belle Crackle to the wood.

Once you apply the Dixie Belle Crackle to the wood, you’ll want to let it dry completely before moving on to your top coat. As it dries, you’ll notice it has a glossy finish—that’s totally normal! It’s just part of the process before the crackle works its magic.

Step 2:

I have been obsessed with the Dixie Belle Chalk Paint color Magnolia so I chose it for this project.

Using a STAALMEESTER Pointed Sash Brush I applied the chalk paint over the entire piece.

Here’s the tricky part — when you apply your top coat, make sure to brush in one direction and don’t back brush. That’s what makes the magic happen! If you go back over the paint, it’ll disturb the crackle effect and you won’t get those pretty, natural-looking cracks. Just load up your brush, swipe it on once, and let the product do its thing!

It works SO fast! If you watch my YouTube video where I was creating this DIY, you can actually see it crackle in real time — it’s so satisfying to watch! The texture starts to form almost instantly as the paint dries, giving you that perfect aged finish without any waiting around.

In this image, you can see the difference between the two stages — one corbel right after applying the paint, and the other after the crackle has done its magic. For this project, I wanted the “cracks” to reveal the natural wood underneath, which gives it that warm, rustic look.

However, if you want your cracks to show up in a color (like blue, green, or even white), you’ll just start with a painted base layer before applying the crackle. Once that dries, you can add your top coat and watch the texture appear. It’s such a fun way to play with color and depth!
