How to Redecorate a Hallway on a Budget Using Only Thrift Store Finds

Making a Space Beautiful for Now (Even When You Have Big Plans Later)
Y’all, I am so glad I finally did this.
Have you ever had big dreams for a space—big plans, big renovations, built‑ins living rent‑free in your brain—and because of those plans, you end up doing… nothing? You keep telling yourself, “One day I’ll do it…” so the space just sits there unfinished and uninspiring.
In my head, this space has always had floor‑to‑ceiling paneling, maybe even paneling on the ceiling, and gorgeous built‑ins running the length of the wall. And while I absolutely still want to do all of that someday, it’s not something I can tackle right now.
What I can do is make the space beautiful—and functional for our family—using things I already own, a few easy DIYs, and a little creativity.
Starting With What I Had
The first piece I tackled was a large cabinet that has truly lived many lives in our house. I originally bought it on Facebook Marketplace for the girls’ bathroom. That didn’t last. Then it moved into Ryan’s room… until it got kicked out of there too…
I had a feeling it could finally work in this hallway. I just needed to change the color!
I painted it using Cast Iron Fusion Paint, which is a really beautiful off‑black. I used a Staalmeester Oval 40, which holds so much paint it honestly still surprises me.
Dark colors are my favorite to paint because they’re quick and forgiving. This cabinet only needed one coat with a few touch‑ups. Fusion Paint has a built‑in primer and sealer, so once you’re done painting… you’re done!

This cabinet is definitely a placeholder. Eventually, I want a beautiful vintage piece here, and this one will move into the garage. Knowing that, I went ahead and added a wood panel to the doors so it’ll be fully enclosed when that time comes.

A Bench, Baskets & Styling the Small Things
Next up was a bench I’ve had for years. It used to live in the foyer until I found the perfect bench for that space, so this one migrated to the hallway. Again—probably temporary—but it works beautifully for now. I touched up the black paint using the same color as the cabinet so everything felt cohesive.
Now let’s talk baskets. I always say I’m not buying anything big unless I have a spot for it… but then I found these two baskets and had to bring them home. Sometimes you just know. And sure enough—I found the perfect spot for them here.

I added a little riser inside the larger basket (something I always grab when thrifting), styled a thrifted blanket from the bins—holes and all—and layered in Sweet Bay magnolia stems. I love magnolia throughout our home, and these stems are bendable so you can style them exactly how you want.

Stacked together? Perfection. I’m so glad I trusted my gut and brought them home.

Curtains To Soften The Space
The linen pinch‑pleat curtains in this space are ones I already had. I originally ordered them for our bedroom but got the width wrong, so they didn’t fully cover the windows. Instead of letting them sit unused, I moved them here—and I love how soft and cozy they make the hallway feel. I linked a similar version here.
Someday I might switch to Roman shades or add a curtain to the garage door, but for now, this works beautifully.

DIY Shelf With Peg Hooks (Beginner‑Friendly!)
I wanted a shelf above the bench, but I didn’t have one that fit the space just right. So I made one.
I used:
– Two pieces of wood
– Thrifted corbels (found at the Goodwill bins)
– Screw‑in peg hooks from Amazon

I’m a very easy DIYer, not a professional. I avoid clamps whenever possible. My trick? Wood glue first, let it sit for 20–30 minutes, then come back with a nail gun once it’s stable.

I painted the shelf the same color as the walls (Sherwin‑Williams White Duck) because I like shelves to blend in and let the decor be the star.

Swapping Doors & Sealing Vintage Finds
We didn’t love the door the builder installed going into the garage, so I found a solid wood door at Habitat for Humanity for $75. After installation, I sealed it using Dixie Belle Clear Flat Gloss , applied with a Sponge (trust me—this makes sealing so much easier).

Mirrors, Art & Little Mom Hacks
This spot was begging for a full‑length mirror. Eventually, I want a vintage one, but for now I used a mirror I already had from Walmart (around $60 for a 70″ mirror). I still love a chunky frame even if they aren’t trending right now.

I also hung photos of my kids—because I love seeing their sweet little faces from when they were younger. I used double‑sided tape behind the frames to keep them from shifting, because crooked pictures will absolutely drive me insane.

I knew I wanted to put a faux tree in the corner so I grabbed a thrifted piano stool that I already owned and used that as a riser for the tree.

The Trinket Tray Era
If you’ve been seeing trinket trays everywhere… same. I officially jumped on the bandwagon.
I hung three small shelves and filled them with tiny treasures I already had—mini statues, porcelain insulators (they make the cutest tiny vases), thrifted Monopoly pieces, and other little finds from my stash.

I could have styled these shelves for hours. And yes—the tops of the trays count as shelves too.
This space has officially become the home for my vintage mini obsession, and I’m so excited to continue thrifting pieces just for this wall.

Rugs, Windowsills & Using Every Inch
I added one of my favorite Walmart rugs—they come in two colors and sizes, have a non‑slip backing, and even fringe you can trim if you want. Someday I might add a runner, but this works perfectly for now.

And don’t forget about window sills. They’re basically tiny shelves begging to be decorated.

Why This Space Works for Us
Here’s the thing—we don’t actually need extra storage here. This isn’t our main entryway. The kids keep their stuff in their rooms, and all sports equipment lives in the garage (for very good reasons).
Since I’m the one who uses this hallway the most, it felt right to claim it as a place to enjoy my vintage finds.
Doing this refresh helped me realize something important: I had built‑ins stuck in my head and couldn’t see any other option. Now? I have a clear vision, a running thrift list, and a space I genuinely love right now.
A Little Challenge for You
If you have a space in your home you’ve been ignoring because you want to “do it right someday,” I challenge you to pause and look around. See what you already have. See what you can move, restyle, or DIY.
You might surprise yourself—and you deserve to enjoy your home now, not just someday.
And yes… dusting is part of life. But I’ll say this: it’s a lot more fun when you’re dusting things you truly love.
Thanks for hanging out with me today. I’ll leave you with some pretty shots of the space—and I’ll see y’all in the next one.
