How to Design a Feminine Vintage Modern Teen Bedroom: DIY Ideas & Thrifted Finds

When we moved into our new home, my 15-year-old daughter’s room was a complete blank slate. She knew exactly what she wanted: lots of white, some blue, and a cottage-beachy, Pottery Barn–love shack, fancy vibe. Together, we’ve been transforming her room into a space that’s light, airy, and just perfect for her.

White Everywhere

One of the biggest projects was installing paneling on her walls. My daughter wanted everything—the molding, paneling, walls, and even the ceiling—to be the same color. We chose Sherwin-Williams Greek Villa, a gorgeous soft white that brightens the room while keeping it cozy. After nearly a month of work, the paneling gave the room a polished, custom look that sets the tone for the entire space.

Key Pieces That Make the Room

We picked out several new items to complement her theme. She requested a white upholstered bed, which paired beautifully with her blue-and-white bedding. For a soft, romantic touch, we added sheer drapes—something I had never used before, but now I’m completely in love with how they elevate the space.

One of my favorite pieces? A beautiful area rug that anchors the room and adds a subtle texture without overpowering the light, airy feel.

DIY Furniture Makeover

We also tackled a Goodwill find: a dresser that needed a little TLC. Using some air-dry clay, IOD moulds, glue, and paint, we repaired and refinished it to fit the room perfectly. I kept the top in a natural light wood to add a hint of warmth and a coastal feel.

To give the drawers a unique touch, we used clay molds to create a floral border—my daughter’s idea—and then painted them in a crisp white color called Victorian Lace from the Fusion Mineral Paint collection. The result? A one-of-a-kind piece that ties in perfectly with the room’s theme.

DIY Wallpaper: A Personal Touch

Instead of buying expensive wallpaper, we created our own using IOD floral stamps. This approach allowed us to keep the exact wall color we wanted while adding delicate blue floral accents. The stamping process was a labor of love, requiring precise placement and lots of inking and ladder climbing—but the end result is stunning. The DIY wallpaper gives the room that “Pottery Barn Love Shack” vibe my daughter wanted, without sacrificing the soft, white background.

Finishing Touches

Bench Ottoman

We added a bench with customized wooden legs, coordinating with the dresser’s natural wood tone, and incorporated artwork with subtle blue accents to complement the stamped walls. While the major elements of the room are complete, there’s still room for additional touches—like sconces, hooks, and storage solutions—to make the space even more functional and stylish.

What We Learned

This project was a labor of love, but it was worth every minute. Working with my daughter to bring her vision to life taught me the value of patience, planning, and a little creativity. Whether it’s DIY furniture makeovers or creating custom wallpaper, the key is to enjoy the process—and the incredible transformation that comes with it.

What do you think? I’d love to hear your ideas for finishing touches or additional DIY projects for this room!
