Summer Thrift Flip: Easy Vintage Book DIY You’ll Love

You are going to LOVE this summer-inspired DIY project! I used a few different IOD products along with some thrifted books I found at the thrift store. Books are honestly the easiest thing to find at thrift shops, and I truly believe they work as home décor no matter their condition. Sometimes the worn, weathered ones make the best statement pieces! Case in point — you’ll see today that I literally ripped the covers off! But trust me, it turned out SO good. Keep scrolling to see the final creation!

One thing thrift stores never run out of is books — and there’s definitely no shortage of DIY ideas using them!

DIY THRIFT FLIPS using the IOD Summer Collection

The first step was ripping the covers off these books.

Next, I gathered four beautiful blue shades of Fusion mineral paint.

Next, I used a STAALMEESTER brush to paint each book spine a different color. Don’t worry if the paint gets on the pages—you can simply tear those pages off!

While the paint was drying, I grabbed my IOD blank ink pad, a bottle of ink, and the IOD Flora & Vine stamp to add some floral embellishments to the spines.

I selected the stamp I wanted for this project and pressed it onto the sticky side of my thin mount.

I applied China Blue ink to the pad, then pressed the stamp firmly into it.

Once the stamp was fully inked, I pressed it firmly onto the spine of the book.

Using my fingers, I pressed the stamp firmly to ensure the ink transferred evenly onto the book spine.

How beautiful is that? I loved how these turned out.

I planned to stack the books to showcase their beautiful spines, but I also wanted to add a stamp to each side of the books to frame them nicely.

I chose a large circular floral stamp from the collection and used the same stamping technique to transfer the design onto the side of the book pages.

I was thrilled with how this turned out. I could have stopped there, but I wanted to take it a step further.

I grabbed the Saint Germain Transfer from IOD and cut out a pink and green vine to add a splash of color that would really pop against the blue.

The transfers have these super helpful gridlines that make it easy to position the vine perfectly on the book spines. First, I laid out the transfer to plan exactly how I wanted it to appear on the stacked books.

Using a transfer tool, I carefully applied the vine pieces onto each book spine.

I did decide to slightly sand the transfers because it makes it look like hte transfer has always been on the piece.

How precious did these books turn out? I absolutely LOVE doing book DIYs because you can customize them perfectly to your home and the season!
