Designer Look on a Dollar Tree Budget: How To Create Easter Mini Home Decor Items

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home decor, and today I’m sharing an easy Dollar Tree DIY that gives high-end, designer vibes without the designer price tag. Mini decor is everywhere right now, and these Dollar Tree foam carrots are the perfect blank canvas for a total glow-up.

I’m showing you two different styles you can create using the same Dollar Tree carrots!

Let’s get started!

Style 1: Mini Gold Carrots (Vintage Brass Look)

The first thing you’ll want to do is remove the greenery that comes attached to the Dollar Tree carrots. Once that’s off, you’ll have a clean base to work with.

To upgrade the carrot tops, I used baby’s twilight bush (available on my website), cutting off just a few small sprigs and gluing them directly into the hole at the top of each carrot. This alone makes a huge difference and instantly looks more realistic!

How to Create the Gold Finish:

  1. Paint the entire carrot black using Fusion Mineral Paint in the color Coal Black, including the greenery. This dark base is key for creating depth.
  2. Once dry, use a dry brush technique to lightly apply the antique gold gilding wax over the entire piece.
  3. Focus on raised areas so the black base shows through slightly. This gives the carrot a true vintage brass figurine look.

The transformation is incredible. These don’t look like foam carrots anymore. They look like small antique decor pieces you’d find in a high-end shop.

Tip: This same technique works on almost anything. I even used it on small toy figurines, and they instantly looked like collected brass antiques.

Style 2: Mini Terra Cotta Carrots (Soft & Neutral)

If gold isn’t your style and you prefer something more subtle and classic, this option is for you.

How to Create the Terra Cotta Look:

  1. Replace the original greenery with a more realistic faux stem.
  2. Paint the bright orange foam carrots with terra cotta paint.
  3. Allow them to dry fully before styling.

The result is a soft, neutral carrot that looks handcrafted and timeless — perfect for farmhouse, cottage, or European-style spring decor.

How to Style Mini Easter Decor

These mini carrots are incredibly easy to style around your home.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Group them inside a cloche or apothecary jar
  • Display them in a letterpress tray
  • Layer them casually on top of decor books
  • Mix gold carrots with other brass mini figurines for a collected look

You truly can’t have too many mini decor pieces because they add charm wherever they land.

Final Thoughts

This DIY proves that you can take almost anything from Dollar Tree and turn it into something that looks vintage, elevated, and designer-inspired. Whether you choose the gold brass look or the soft terra cotta style, these mini carrots are an easy way to add character to your spring and Easter decor.

I hope this inspires you to look at inexpensive items with fresh eyes and imagine what they could become with just a little creativity.
